Bike Church?

Does cycling/ training get in the way of other ties we have to the community?

I see it as a good thing that cycling gets in the way of local clan meetings and witch burnings :-}

Yes, it does get in the way of other community ties. Especially with many of the races being on Sunday, it definetly interferes with Church. Although, I believe that Church should be outside during the nice weather. It is hard to go and sit inside a building with florescent lights when a lot of your friends are outside riding. It is much easier when it is raining or snowing to go to Church. In general, when I am really training it gets in the way of some family stuff too.

certainly it can be a chore to squeeze in some miles between little league, church, going to DOT meetings to complain about the lack of bike facilities/shoulders.

Cycling really does force choices. This has been one of the things that has caused me a lot of internal anguish. Community projects that I have been involved in have given way to the Saturday morning ride. Even more of a struggle has been the Sunday racing, I have not attended church because I have chosen to race. This has been hard and many times when I am racing I have thought and questioned my decision. My rationalization is always I have a finite number of years to race (trust me they are very limited) and when I realize I am too to continue I will give back all the time I took from the church and the community. That is a really crappy argument, and I know it!
