Rock stars?

Don't we look more like a band than a bike racing team? This photo appeared in Thursday's Virginia Beach Beacon, along with a story about Tripower's National Club of the Year award.

We could pass as an incarnation of Fleetwood Mac, don't you think?

Answerz

#1 Yes, Kevin.

#2--Yes, Carol. We both hit the trail on cross bikes, what fun. I theorize that we were the first to ever do 3 Freedom Park laps in the snow while also riding cross bikes.

#3--That's Kurt Moore, prez of EVMA pictured here with his wife Penny, perhaps a future prez of EVMA.

Who dat?

Quiz time. Snow made a rare appearance here last night and today. In Norfolk, there was no accumulation but an hour away in James City County's Freedom Park there was about an inch. You can't play if you were on the ride today!

#1--WHO is this christening the snow when a perfectly good porta potty is right there?

#2--WHO hit the pavement? This is multiple choice. Is it A--CAROL or B--LIZ (Me)? Seems folks get us mixed up so "snow" what you know with the right answer!

#3--WHO was doing trail maintenance on this butt-cold day? He has trail marking flags in his hand.

5-7-5 in the 7-5-7

(left, Me, McMahon and Young Mark on the pre-Teeuwen loop today. Photo by Dan Gibson.)

I am well aware that the Internet is overstocked with bad poetry. I can't resist, however, entering this Haiku contest the Virginian Pilot has going. The theme is "Hampton Roads Traffic." Who better suited than cyclists to create traffic poetry? (Most popular American versions of Haiku follow 5-7-5 syllable count, though it's not that simplified in Japanese. So I stray at times.) A sample:

Honks and Jeers fade
when flags half-mast stretch sideways
in bitch-slapping wind.

Grazing the pavement
an innocent touch of wheels
I bleed before it hurts.

Back in the saddle
I hit Norfolk State's pothole
after two weeks off.

The cop pulled up
herded us like teenagers
irate driver had called.

Pride de Tidewater

Four of the best area junior racers showed up for a recent charity ride, Miles for Meredith, held on New Year's Day. Proceeds benefited Meredith Nicholls, the mountain biker who was injured in 2004.

Look for this photo of Young Mark Edwards and Elliot Craddock in Monday's Co-Pilot, the back page of the front section of Virginian Pilot. Both Edwards and Craddock are 16.

Upfront is Lucas Harville, 17 followed by Young Zack Kyler, 14. I asked Lucas where he planned to go to college and he said a possibility is Brevard College, a private college in NC mountains.

Zach made his debut in cycling by pyramiding and then moved on to road and cross racing.
